Hi i am looking to build a high powered 1293 turbo engine to put in my clubby. i have been looking at engine kits from minispares/bill richards and avonbar. Mini spares part ENG004

Avonbar part APEKT1001O

i was wondering if anyone has had any experience with any of these. any advice would be appreciated

thanks

If they come fitted with a fast road cam you should double check if that one is suitable for a Turbo motor.

You don't generally want a cam with lots of overlap with Turbo engines.

two concerns

Piston dish ( compression ratio) you want to end up around 8.5:1 for a turbo lump, so you need at least 10cc in the pistons depending on other items, head, gasket, deck height, etc.

and camshaft, both of those have fairly mild cams, the Avon bar one being built for turbo use has the phase 2 which is a great turbo cam, and will have a decent piston dish.

Ok so the avonbar kit would be the preferred kit? i was looking to fit a T25 or gt17 turbo unit and i will custom make a manifold etc. what sort of head would suit this set up? i understand that 12g heads are commonly used. and also what is a better turbo for my wanted set up, a gt17 or T25?

Thanks

12g940 head is the casting that basicaly in 98% of largebore (1275 style) engines, Avonbar are very knowegable on turbo stuff so would be able to advise on heads ( which they also do) or you can find out the piston dish etc and get a head at a better price from somone like Turbophil,

generally normaly non turbo performance heads wil have a 21cc head chamber, you'll probably want sonthing a bit larger to get the compression down to allow the boost to be crammed in...  28cc is perfectly feasible for chamber size, but you dont want to go too big otherwise you lose efficiency.

thr GT17 from the Saab95 is a good choice, the t25 is a bit old hat now, also for manifolds if you want to take the easy route talf to Matt at fusion fabs. http://www.fusionfabs.co.uk/

T25 is abit old, and possibly abit large.

Although depending on your budget and what power you want you could get either turbo and have it hybridised.

Not a lot of point the gt17 us good for 200+ hp, and cheap, if you want more just find a gt2056.

thanks for all the great advice. so the GT17 is the preferred option over a T25 for a 1293? where is the best place to get a decent GT17?

The T series turbos are old tech now, you're much better off with the newer GT type.
A lot of people are using the cheap Chinese turbos, I've not heard of many problems. I bought a supposed new Garrett turbo of eBay a few years ago from a Uk supplier, only to find recently it was scrap.

Also worth a look is the td04 from the same 95, they are a direct swap for the gt17, but a bit beefier.
