Hi everyone this may have been mentioned before, so excuse me if it has. I was just wondering if anyone knows what steel gauge including measurements of the steel plates which are welded to the boot floor. Mine were so badly deteriorated I was not able to use them to make some new ones. I believe foam from the rear sub frame sits underneath them I'm not sure ? I have included a picture and have highlighted what I mean.

Thanks for your help in advance

I just made some using spare metal from the rear seat base... They don't have anything to do with the sub frame, but they are directly under where the rear seat/bulkhead/arch stiffener meet, so assume it has something to do with that.

I belive they where for the hydrolastic suspension bump stops... Not needed and will be a rust trap (like the felt pads between body and subframe so don't replace) so if you are not going for concourse I would advise against refitting them.

Yup no need for them as they dont really give any strength at all and as mentioned just form another rust trap.

Thanks for your help and advice. I think I will opt to leave them out. I presume there should be enough clearance between the sub frame and floor to leave the felt pads out so as to not cause any vibration issues. I don't suppose you could also advise me on another issue I have. I have put a new boot floor in the rear using a genuine heritage panel. The problem is the new panels are for an injection car because the hole for the fuel lines is a large oval as opposed to the two holes for the fuel lines. I have made a plug up to weld the fuel injection hole up and I plan to drill the original holes in for the normal carb fuel lines. You wouldn't happen to be able to tell me the measurements so I could drill the fuel pipe holes out please ? Or do you have any other suggestions ?

You are correct to leave the felt pads out. In fitting a new boot floor it is usually possible to ensure that there is sufficient subframe clearance to avoid contact with maximum load on the floor and full compression of the subframe mounting rubbers. Some production cars were too tight, hence the felt.

If you really needed something, simple ribbed rubber sheet, glued to the subframe after all painting is complete, may be better than felt.

The felt also helped prevent droning due to the size of the boot floor pan.

On my 97mpi it had rubber pads instead of felt. It trapped water too but nowhere near as bad as felt.

Always took them out and never noticed a difference in noise emissions...

Legend would have it that the pads where used as shims for fitting the subframes without scratching the paint... O_O

The only floors are late injection and will need modifying as you intend on doing, have you not got the old floor to get the size of the holes or maybe the grommet that fits in it?
