Dear all,

I have a basic SONY radio/CD with 4x45w printed on the front. (came with the car & I feel there's no need to change it.

What I did need to do, is install some speakers! (none came with the car!)

So, I got some PIONEER TS-G1722I (very budget speaker from local car accessories shop)

specs are;

240w max.

40w nominal

17cm coaxial 2-way

4 ohm.

They work, but if you want to go over 25% volume, or put some bias on the bass, then these speakers start to complain.

I'm of an age (old), where amps, crossovers, bass tubes and the like are not required BUT I still want reasonable volume & some bass.

Q1. Surely my SONY at 4 x 45w is up to the job in a mini.?

Q2. If it is, what spec. should I be looking at for a set of speakers to go on my parcel shelf?

cheers for any advice

either 5.25" component speakers or 6" components. will sort the issue out your head unit is fine

cheers.

just went to ebay and typed in 6" component speakers.....

they almost all, seem to come with separate tweeters; does this mean I can hook up these and place them in the dash, whilst having the 6" on the parcel shelf.?

for around £40, I'd be happy if they worked with my head unit, which by the way is a CDX L 400X (if it makes any difference)

but what spec. with regards to 'power' handling.

to be honest I think the head unit is losing control of the speakers rather than the speakers being poor.

Guess what I have attached to my head unit.

They look familiar!

When you say; "losing control', what do you mean exactly.?

I'm happy to replace the head unit, if the speakers are OK.

cheers

Ok. Often you can over drive a speaker with too much power or you have a situation where you can have a head unit that can not move the speaker correctly.

Which yours is I can not say. I would be tempted to pop down to a car Hifi shop and have a chat.

I have to say I don't know exactly what mine are but they were not expensive and mine are mounted in a box stuffed with acoustic fiber.

For the speakers to work properly, they need to have the same or similar RMS power to what your head unit is capable of outputting. It looks like your speakers have a 40W RMS but I would hazard a guess the 4x45 plastered on the head unit box is speaking about peak power, not RMS.

As a result your head unit is probably underpowered and not able to effectively drive your speakers meaning they're distorting quickly.

So then, reversing the question, what 'power' / spec. do I need for a new HU.?

As most use MAX power, I'm going to need this figure to search with.

cheers as always

OR

can I buy an amp?

I have holes ready in the dash for a x4 channel system.

so perhaps a 4 channel amp @ 40rms +/- (speaker rating)

cheers

You can do whatever you want.

But I would still be doing what I suggested first.

A lot depends on the head unit.

If it is ******* then an amp will hide the problem.

A suitable modern head unit should fix it and add greater flexibility for you.

Check also the Ohms rating for the speakers and the head unit they should both be the same Usually 4 or 8 Ohms. I'll bet that head unit is actually 45w split 4 ways not 45 per channel...............................

Going to get a new HU, as this one came with the car & it's a bit too 'flashy' for my wooden dash!

As for a car audio shop...? I live at least an hours drive from such a thing - here in West Flanders, Belgium.

Thanks for the advice, which without, would have seen me buy a new set of speakers, for absolutely no reason.

Cheers

It sounds like they're clipping or the gain is set to high on the sony HU. I've a stonch hatrid for sony headunits. Halfords do a Pioneer Bluetooth/cd/mp3/usb/DAB headunit for ~£50 now and again. I have the Pioneer HU and the same speakers as you in my 106 Rallyé and they're 100%, they only clip when I'm blasting something bass heavy at full volume, which is almost never.

I've seen a new Blaupunkt Melbourne on ebay for £40!

max power is 4x 45w which I now know to ignore!

RMS power is 4 x 20w

do you think this will be capable of powering my pioneers sufficiently.?

cheers (again)

ps. it's the least 'bling-bling' that I can find.
