Ford Escort cognoscenti would know immediately what you were referring to if you said ‘XOO 347F’.

One of the most famous racing Escorts of all time, the twin-cam Mk1 used in 1968 by the de facto works Ford team, Alan Mann Racing.

And now this red-and-gold masterpiece, still resplendent in the original AMR livery, is among the lots for Bonhams’ annual Members’ Meeting sale on Sunday, March 19th.

What a beautiful car.

I had the pleasure of co-driving another ex-works Escort TC, BEV781G, in 1970 on some international rallies. They were truly superb cars.

Interestingly I have been working on the head for a 1978 Escort RS2000 rally car this morning. It is an easy head to modify as there is very little valve shrouding. The main work has been removing the big valve guide bosses in the inlet & exhaust tracts, opening up the exhaust port to reduce 'pumping losses' and de-shrouding slightly to enable the bigger vales I am fitting to work at their best.

With the Pinto engine it is good to run a compression ratio of between 10.5 & 11.0 to 1. The one I'm doing will be 10.75:1.

With the chosen cam, Capri 3-litre carb, better inlet & ex. manifolds, etc, around 160 bhp is expected. That should make it go a bit, especially with the 'rocket' box and 4.7:1 FDR.

Not keen on the 38 DGAS carb. Even when i had one rejetted on a rolling road for the 2.1 engine i was running it was never a good carb. Fitted a 32/36 DGAV suitably rejetted and on the rolling road gave as good if not better results and it made for a more pleasant drive as well.

Found the 38 to be a much more fuel hungry beast.

That's very interesting. Thanks for the advice.
I will speak to my son whose rally car this is and get him to do some more research.
We are using bigger valves and a much better rally cam.

I love Mk1 Escorts. My Dad had a 1300GT with ZF gearbox - he tells a story of how he moved some cones on a roundabout and drove on the then unopened but completed M4 one night - he did 104 miles in 58 minutes! He did take a Twin Cam for a test drive but ended up with the GT as he couldn't justify the extra expense at the time.

That Alan Mann car is fantastic. I have a feeling it will break records price wise...

Indeed they were/are fantastic cars. I am looking forward to test driving my son's RS2000.

I never owned a MK.1 or Mk.2 Escort, but I have driven all of the performance versions including Twin-Cams, Mexico's, RS1600's and RS2000's.

I did my first rally in an Escort in 1968. It was a Twin Cam and was driven on that event by my friend David Sutton who later ran the only private team to win the World Championship when Ari Vatanan/David Richards did so in a Mk.2 RS1800.

That Alan Mann car is very genuine and, as said, will go for serious money.
