Mine failed today. Emissions was the main one but knew it would as the used hiff38 I fitted had not been setup.

Hazard lights worked at first then when on a while go slower then just stop on,weird. I fitted a new hazard relay on at last mot,any ideas?

Sidelight bulbs have blue tint, but was arguable as I ordered bright white led ones and to me they are, tester says they have a slight blue to em.
Window washers cleaning the bonnet not screen, thanks to the paint shop for not fitting them correct way round.

Finally I want them to setup carb and timing to pass emissions, yet he asked me to sort other issues as he does not want to accept any blame if he scratches the new paint work.I don't mind but that's a retest fee on top of the bill cus I had to take it away to fix my bits.

Only miner things accept Co2 readings really.

Nothing is free if taken away and back in 10 days.
For a free retest you need to take the car back by the end of the next working day on those certain items.

I would suggest talking to the garage about it. I run a group of garages and if Someone offered me the repairs but I refused the work I wouldn't then charge for the retest.

Although if a garage turns down work because they might damage the paintwork they may not be the best place to have repairs done or maybe not even an mot in the future!

Used to be 10 days for certain items, but can see the official gov website now showing this as next working day.

Partial retest if taken away and returned in the 10 days.

Use a better garage, my mot station doesn't charge anything if you take it away and repair within the 10 days.

You can get free retests, depends on the garage, ask before you book the test.

The screen jets will just steer round with a pin, if they're not something different to standard.

Sidelights will be whiter than yellowish filament bulbs, but let him win that argument  for good will.

Hazards should fail in the off position, is it the correct flasher, what year car? Do the indicators work normally, straight after the hazards have thrown a wobbly.

cant stress enough to use mot stations and garages that our 'friendly' towards older cars. they usually will  bend the rules slightly for you and allow you to sort a few bits here and there and will just look after you a little bit more than usual.

I use a MX5 specialst for my mx5 and always use a mini garage for help and a MOT place where I know the guy is very into his classics. it does really help!

Sorry but your sidelight bulbs may be illegal anyway and even if they passed MOT you could be pulled up by Plod at any time and fined. Please remember that the MOT does NOT say that the car is actually legal or safe. You are not allowed to show any blue light externally, despite the fact that some people intentionally do until they are caught. There is a clampdown on illegal number plates at the moment, lights may be next.

The Type Approval on a sidelight, which allows it to be "e" or "E" marked (there is a slight difference) seems to only apply with its intended bulb fitted. It may be possible to buy complete LED light units that are "e" marked, off another car, and these would certainly be legal. Headlights would not, no way, for now.

Now this is one area where the law is an ass, but sadly we still have to comply with it. There is a get out. If you put the car through IVA Test (which it will fail miserably without major modifications) you are allowed to use lights which are "as bright as" E marked lights, so you just put the LED bulbs in and file off the moulded E on the light. (Falsely affixing an E mark likely falls foul of EU law in a very big way...). As I said, the law is an ass, but if you fit "warm white" LEDS no-one will know or care, just don't say that I told you to break the law! And maybe it passes IVA (which is a form of Type Approval) and still gets pulled up by Plod.... Thank the likes of those who went to jail for building duck islands at the taxpayers expense for the more nonsensical legal quirks that we have to comply with.

But for goodness sake do not fit LEDS in the reversing light. Therein lie a multitude of legal perils and you can't even have a legal LED one, properly type approved, on a new car. Sorry, but this area really is a legal minefield.

It is sad that he would not tweak your mixture. Most MOT testers will do that on the spot for a nominal charge. Perhaps he is too young to remember carburettors? I would be positively fuming if that happened to me.

The advice about finding a good garage above is very sound. One near me still understands Minis, and pretty much anything else too. The smallish ones where the proprietor has a few relevant qualifications after his name tend to be good. Some are in unauspicious back street locations.

Good luck with the re-test.

Reverse lights aren't part of the MOT either.

That's correct,
You only need what was original. 1st April 1980 for rear fogs. They must comply if they are fitted though - correct location & brightness, drivers tell tale...

Not for reverse lights, they are not tested at all.
