I've tried the screw removal kit, it doesn't seem to touch it but I assume that's because they'll be ht bolts?

You need a decent quality kit that has a cobalt drill 8% cobalt is better than 5% that most sell, although I suspect if you have sheared it off and you cannot drill it out then in all likely hood you have over tightened the stud or it has damage...

I say this because most easy out kits come with decent drills that will easily cope with EN16 which is what the standard ones should be, or you tried to drill the broken bit with to fast a speed, which will over heat even cobalt to the point of failure

These are the best type to use as the helix is much more efficient than the tapered screw...

Dormer or Snap on both do a kit.... but there are other makes out there.

Never drill at high speed with a cobalt drill bit, slowly slowly catchy monkey is the name of the game here. +1 for Dormer.

Centre punch on the outer edge tap it out

This works, I have used this a couple of times with studs sheared in block.

welding near engine components is a last resort, and it maybe easier to weld on a nut from the inside as you won't be able to damage the block so easily

Does anyone know the correct tap required for the block? I'll need to clean the threads when I've got the broken bit out.

Started drilling it out last night, it's getting there now. Slow and steady work though isn't it.
