Strangely I seem to remember Vizard saying use thread lube and finger tight only?

That's the way I was taught to do it, never torque studs into place.

Finger tighten studs into place, as the torque applied will stretch both ends of the stud correctly.

 

Also the best bit of kit for broken stud (EDM machine) or for tap removal a tap disintegrator

Also make sure the threaded holes have a decent countersunk edge, this stops the top thread from pulling up which is the biggest sole reason for new engines blowing a head gasket..

There are some special studs that can be torqued but you will know when you have these as they will have a means to drive them, ie a allen hex end or similar, Mini engine and gearbox studs do not have a method to drive them therefore they are hand tight only

These type studs usually have a non threaded smaller section at the bottom that seats on the bottom of the stud hole and it's that portion that you are actually torquing down onto and not the thread...
