After rebuilding the engine in my Mini, which included a new head gasket, I've noticed there seems to be coolant weaping from between the block and the head. It seems to be from a number of places all the way round.

Other than a de-coke, the head had no other work done and I don'y know any history of the engine prior to me buying the car so this could be an existing problem.

I intend to take the head off and get it skimmed and pressure tested.

What is the best head gasket for a 998cc engine in standard tune,

Thanks

You need a Payen HG. I bet the one you have used is Copper by chance??

Did you re-torque the head after the first run and cool down?

The gasket I used was probably a copper one.

I've only been about 6 miles in the car so far! I'll strip the head off tomorrow and get it to the engine shop next week

I had a similar issue with mine except that it was chucking oil out as well. When you rev it does it spray out even more?

A skim and a payen gasket did the trick. It's been fine since.

The payen gasket appeared to have a coating were as the cheaper copper gaskets don't. I'm not sure if that matters as the head on mine definitely needed skimming.

so the head is finaly in the engine shop, but the only Payen gasket I can find on Minispares is for a Pre A plus 998, is that one right for mine? The car is a 1989 998cc. Here's the link, which one do I need?

Can I suggest you hold on.

it does appear that right after fitting the head, you filled it with coolant?

if so, drain that out and fill with water. Leave that in there for about 300 miles, then drain and fill with coolant.

Coolant breaks down the surface tension of the water and so will cause anything to leak like a sieve.

Water will allow the gasket to swell and seal.

Thanks, that's great info but got the call today, the head was warped after all and will be skimmed, new guides, and ready for the end of the week :)
