I am sure this has been covered before, but I am running out of ideas now, ok the car passed to MOT the other day but I do have a continuing problem with the idle speed being erratic. the car is question is a mini cooper spi, the car runs fine at first and sits about 1200 rpm on cold tick over, but once the car gets warm the rpm on takeover can jump to 2000 and on occasion up to 3000 rpm, at this point if I switch it off and back on again it usually is down to around 1000rpm but its random and could again sit higher, I have changed all the vac pipes and they are fitted correctly, I have changed the temp sensor in the inlet manifold and the air temp one in the air filter housing, the throttle cable is working ok and not stiff or snagging on anything. and if I lift the throttle pedal it makes no difference to the rpm, the stepper motor does it thing on start up and switch off, clicking 4 times etc. so any advice would be good, the next  step I guess is getting hold of a diagnostic reader, have seen the on ebay for £200 quid, maybe I need to bite the bullet and buy one.

Did you flush out the inlet manifold when you fitted the water temp sensor? Fuel trap contaminated? Wiring ok for the sensors?

hi, yes I did make sure it was clean in there, new fuel trap fitted, but yes I will have to check the wiring to the sensors, it looks ok but maybe I need to look closer. thanks for that, I will have look later today, cheers

What year of SPi? Is it an early one with a throttle switch? If so check it's working.
If a later one use a multimeter to check the TPS.

If you want a code reader, I have one in the for sale section which is cheaper than eBay

hi, its a 95 spi. I had a look yesterday and fitted another air temp sensor in the air filter housing, as  the one I fitted the other day was one that I acquired for god know where, anyway with the new sensor fitted it does seem to be better but still note correct as it starts but it seems to be arse about face, sitting at approx. 1000 rpm when cold , but just up to 1200- 1500 rpm when hot.
