My 1997 Cooper keeps blowing the indicator fuse as soon as I turn the ignition key.

We've changed the hazard switch and checked the relays, as much of the wiring as we can see (most of it is encased in tape or plastic tubing so we are having to assume it's ok) and the fusebox, all seem ok but difficult to tell when the fuse blows straight away.

The hazards still work and funnily enough so do the indicators when the immobilizer is on, which is not very useful but I think it proved that the wiring must be ok to that point???

Could it be the ignition switch?  Is there any way to test it?  I don't want to fork out £50 on the off chance this might be the issue.  It's bad enough getting through packets of fuses.  Hoping someone can help before the other half blows a gasket

As the indicators and hazards work when the immobliser is on, then I would look at that circuit first, can you disconnect it and try then? is it a factory fit or after market. I feel your going to need someone with a tester and knows how to use it if nothings obvious. I cant see it being the ignition switch as all thats doing is supplying  power, if the ignition switch was shorting out you'd have more than blown fuses,

Thanks for your response.  It's factory fit but looks like it's been moved about a bit as when we got the car the box was zip tied to the heater duct hose, some of the wiring has been disconnected, both the boot and bonnet switches and goodness knows what else as there are a few dangling wires with ends taped off! As if electrics weren't complicated enough......

Will try disconnecting it and see if that works.  Fingers crossed.
