Hi all. I got my hands on a 1962 Austin mini traveller a few years ago and the time has come to start work on it (other projects nearly at an end :P ). The last owner said the engine had problems in the mid 90's and he had it changed for a 1000cc one. I am assuming he meant a 998, which has since stood in a rotting garage since 1998. I want to get the engine out anyway and put an original 850 back in there as the final part of the restoration but need to work out what this block is in the first place. I'm going to try and post a picture or 2, the engine tag is missing (or not in the place I thought is should be).

Yep looks like a small bore engine.

Could be 998 or 850 from what I can see.

Thanks :)

How can I work out if it's a 998 or an 850? I don't want to go buying an 850 to rebuild if I already have one, the last owner didn't really know much about it and wasn't sure if it was a 998 when I asked him.

Or is it impossible without opening it up?

You could try looking at the back of the block behind the bottom hose to see if there is either an engine cc tag there or the cc cast into the block.
