Hi everyone, I'm very new to this.

I just bought my first mini it's a 1996 sprite auto. The guy who owned it before me had swapped the engine from a different car into it as the original one was knackered, but he didn't put the immobiliser box to go with the engine in so obviously there is no way to start it.

Does anyone know of a way to bypass the immobiliser in some way? I know this is an open forum and nobody will want to discuss the issue but I don't really know what else to do. I don't really want to buy an alarm/immobiliser box and get it reprogrammed as I hope to convert it to a manual sometime in the near future. I have the V5 and the keys if anyone is concerned that I don't own the car.

If anyone can point me in the right direction I would really appreciate it as I'm really eager to get it running! Thanks all.

Okay first up on the model you have the MEMS ECU and 5AS (alarm immobiliser) are matched together from the factory.
The code between the two is digital, so no way to bypass.
If the previous owner swapped only the engine I am confused, presumably the engine ECU (MEMS) was the same and the immobiliser/alarm (5AS) was the same so no conflict?
Do tell more....

Hi thanks for the reply.

I have no idea what has happened to the immobilizer box. From what I've been told one of the previous owners started to convert the car to a manual, he removed the original auto engine which was lying around in bits for years and became unusable. The previous owner to me was a mini restorer and he managed to put a replacement engine in (without the immobilizer for some reason).

So is the only way around it to buy a matching ECU and immobilizer? Thanks

There are three ways assuming it is that problem.
1) Buy a matched ECU and 5AS with keyfob needs to be the right one for you model (Cooper or non Cooper)
2) Get a 5AS and find someone who can program it to the ECU
3) Send off your ECU to an ECU specialist to get the internal software modified to avoid the need to receive the 5AS code

What's the part number of your MEMS ECU? Did the car run before?

Another option is the Specialist Components aftermarket package depending on what pieces you have already. Identifying the engine that is in the car would be helpful, is it for sure an injection version?

The engine was taken out of a running car so I was told so hopefully everything still works. Does anyone know of any good ECU specialists?

It is definitely an injection engine I'm ninety percent sure it's an spi but like i said I'm new to this.

Thanks again guys.
