I've ended up with a saggy mess, too cold maybe and too smooth in places (I didn't think to scuff up the red oxide first!), I'm hoping to peel off the bad areas and then give it a light coat over the lot to tidy it up.

Does it HAVE to be over painted or can it be left as the finish? It's black and I am only going to coat it in black smoothrite if it needs a coat, I'd rather put a clear coat of underbody wax over it if anything?

Thanks in advance :-D

It's always a good idea to paint over it as it seals it up nicely to keep out the wet and a good coat of wax oil or something similar just to make sure.

It does say it can be left as is but i would over paint it.

You do not have to scuff up anything, the surface needs to be clean and dry though. Is the red oxide the stuff from Halfords ie red primer?? i had issues with reactions on my sons car. That was bloody cold when i applied it on his car but had reactions everywhere.

On Paddy i only use one type of primer ie Epoxy and it went on fine.

You really need to shake up the container first and ideally warm it up. I left mine in the sunshine for 10-15mins and it went on lovely.

It's actually wilkos red oxide! As in Wilkinsons on the high street not wilkos the car refinishing stuff, lol.

I did shake it well, maybe it's the cold and maybe I've put it on too thick?

What will over painting do if I can get a good even coat to stick?

Looks like more painting then!

Ahh so not proper Red Oxide, more likely a red primer. Get rid of it and use an epoxy primer.

Over painting it will give another layer of protection.

Gravitex has huge amounts of solvent in it so unless your very careful it can react with all sorts. I would over paint it even if it's just with black rattlers.

I've scrapped the bad areas off, it had dissolved two layers of the red oxide stuff! I'd probably just put too much on I think?

I've gone over the areas with smoothrite to create a bond and seal the bare metal to the ok gravitex, I'll then do some thin coats of gravitex to create an even (ish) finish then top the lot with black smoothrite as originally planned, thanks guys.

My feeling is it will unless you build the layers up very slowly

I'm thinking back to my lads car that i had such a mixture of primers on the underside its no wonder it reacted. Although i'm sure the temp had a big part in it.

Realistically there should not be a major build up of Gravitex unless you hold the gun in one place for too long.

Warmed the bottle and did it during the day today, no problem going over dry smoothrite, phew!
I'll coat it with black smoothrite tomorrow night before putting the running gear on, coming together now.
