Hi all, been away from the forum for a while now - not had much time over winter due to work..

Replacing all 4 cones on my mini ('98 Jap Spec) and I've hit a bit of a snag with the offside (drivers side) front cone, in the fact that the old cone (see picture below for entertainment / informational purposes!) came out fine due to the fact its around half the size of the new one! I am struggling to get the new one into place due to the A/C 'thing' (think its the dryer? - has the sight glass on it) being in the way... really don't want to degas the system and take it to bits if I dont need to... does anyone know of a trick to getting the new cone in without messing with the A/C system?

Cheers! :)

Well cone needs to go in and you will need to use a cone compressor.

So you will need to move anything that gets in the way.

I was looking into this the other day actually. The top tower bolt is directly under the A/C drier, red arrow in the pic below. I was quoted $50 AUD to remove the gas and refill it when it was all bolted up again. I needed to change the evaporator unit in the cabin so had all the pipes out. Not too hard actually.

Using a compressor - I'm going to try to get it a bit more compressed and try again later - the dryer still looks as though it will be in the way though :(

Can't you buy hi los wind them right down put in the cone and wind the hi lo back up. I never used a cone compressor putting the cones back in (with hi-lo's) but did taking them out. Might be cheaper less messing about and upgrade as a bonus 👍🏻

Yes, if using the compressor the dryer/accumulator has to come out. It is not difficult but the system has to be de-serviced and re-serviced afterwards.

Thanks for the reply - that's exactly the same angle I was about to upload. One of my dads friends is an a/c engineer, got him to degas it correctly yesterday, dryer unit is out (tip be careful of the small washers on the lines either side!)

She already has minisport hilos on the front - tried winding them right back at first, old flat cone came out easy, the new much bigger one... No chance :/

Another amazing design decision by rover ;) I'm trying to remove the fuel lines for my restoration and one of the bulkhead clamps is directly behind the subframe. The sub will have to come out to remove the pipes!

Update on this - no problems getting the cone compressor in after removing the dryer, probably a good thing to have the a/c serviced anyway - had it vacuumed (cleaning and removing all old gas) and pressure tested and then re-gassed - took 325 grams for anyone whos interested...
