Fitted new bearings and races, torqued up with flat washer first then with tapered washer. Now there seems to be slight play in bearings (balljoints are fine). I have read that slight play is fine and maybe desirable with tapered bearings. Is this correct?

You did hit them twice with the monstrous torque required. Not sure of the figure off the top of my head but it required the use of my foot to deliver.

My torque wrench goes to 210nm, think as my mini is 1989 that figure needed is nearer 250nm. So I tightened to 210nm then with a scaffolding bar cranked around to next split pin opening on the nut. Cant be far off the required tightness! Sure some will frown at this method! Maybe go to next slot on the nut?

I think this figure is 270nm and on to next slot. I say go to the next slot and see how it feels.

Think maybe I'll have to take apart and take a closer look at hub flange and split collar. Maybe first I'll try going to next split pin hole, we'll see!! From what I've read seems like a few thou of endfloat was ok with tapered bearings.

If you've tightened them on the bench to as much as 100 ft / lb and you can feel play, then something's not right with the assembly somewhere, be it bearings or hub.

Tightening to 210 nm and then going to the next split pin hole would easily be 270 nm+. Any more would be over tightening and in any case, if you are getting play at 210 nm, as above, there's an issue.

More and more these days, I find the hubs are worn.

Think I'll start with drive flange and split collar. It really is only the slightest of play though, hardly anything

Which brand of bearing are they, genuine or otherwise, and were they supplied as a matched pair with spacer? And did you keep each bearing inner with its own outer? (The cone angle may vary slightly).

If you're feeling play without having had the weight of the car on it, it's not likely to be the flange & collar.

They were Quinton and hazel and yes they were paired to race and had a new spacer. Done both sides and same amount of tiny play in both

From what I've seen from searching old threads the endfloat and no play on bearings seem to have cropped up before and divided opinion!!
