For those who watched it live on Sunday on the Donnington round in the BTCC programme the on-board footage of Billy's crash was horrific. I'm saddened to read he's just lost the lower part of both of his legs.

For such a talented young guy this is a great shock. A Just Giving page has been set up for him.

He will be back I'm sure. Think of the famous Douglas Bader who had lost both legs and became a Spitfire pilot and a real hero. I had a friend who lost an arm and a leg. He did a lot of club rallying, but the RAC would not grant him a full International Comp. Licence. He contacted Douglas Bader for advice and Bader went with him to the RAC Comps. Dep't. He soon got his full licence and went on to achieve some excellent results.

What Billy will need is someone to encourage him and tell him that "He can do it".

Poor kid is 17!

I rather suspect he will be contacted soon by the more than super-human Alex Zanardi!

He might also be inspired by Jason Watt who became paraplegic but went on to win the Danish International Touring Car Championship using hand controls.

One slight glimmer of hope for him is his Just Giving page. The object was to raise £260,000 in 120 days; they have just surpassed this on the first day. In no way will it make up for his legs but if it carries on at the same pace it'll be a great help and motivation for him when he comes out of his coma.

I agree, a visit from Alex Zinardi will hopefully be on the horizon.

"The 17-year-old has been honoured with a Daily Mirror Pride of Sport award, in partnership with TSB, which he will get at a glittering event this week."
