Last bits being fitted to my project, all gone really well but stuck with this simple (seemingly simple) task !

New rear window rubbers fitted - how do you then fit the opening rear quarter??

I can see that it is simply a matter of pushing the glass frame against the rubber and putting the hinge and clip screws in - BUT I cannot push it anywhere near enough to get the hinges near the screw holes.

You cannot fit the rubber after fitting the window - so how do you do this??

Frightened of busting sommat or damaging screw threads in the shell.

Any help please???

Is it the correct seal - obvious question out the way first. I've never had a problem, but I've always replaced the original seal.

Perhaps you could feed the seal in to the hinge then  push both together on to the bodywork?

As Ethel suggested, I think that you may have the wrong seals as it is normally fairly easy. I assume that the opening quarter lights used to be ok, and they are being refitted after a restoration? If they are new to the car, having previously had fixed quarter lights, it is possible that the screw holes are in the wrong places.

I believe the only difference in seals is the length, just rub a bit of soap/swarfega on the chrome bracket and push the glass trim over the seal.

I wondered if they could be a generic seal cut to length. Any I've taken off were dinted by the hinges, so I guess they are tight when new.

lubrication is your friend when fitting windows with new seals. Although the opening rear quarters can be a bugger with new rubbers trying to get the rubber behind the glass/fame and not squished out the front, and the hinge screw holes to line up.

What I tend to do is use slightly longer screws, witch can be swapped out later for shorter once the window is fitted. Lube up the rubber/glass with wd40 and sort of push the glass into the seal at an angle towards the b pillar. Then get the hinges as close to lining up as possible before getting a helper to put the screws in, or at least get them started. And before the front hinges are fully tightened, using a plastic filler spreader to help push the seal behind the glass/frame.

Is this about getting the glass into the frame? My understanding was that the problem was getting the complete quarterlight on to the car, having fitted new seals.

No it was about getting the glass fitted to the car. With the seal behind the quarterlight and not squished out around it, and getting the front hinge brackets (the rear opening bracket isn't really a problem) close enough to the screw holes, so that the screws line up and go in on the b pillar.

That is what I thought, but some of the replies had me wondering.

I imagine it's easier with 2 people but I'm not sure where your issues are coming from

Thanks for the ideas, will have another go today. As Karl summarises above, the 'issue' is getting the frame close enough to the hinge screws to fit them and being unable to compress the seals enough to allow this.

I think I remember kind of sliding the hinges over the seal with some car shampoo as lubricant then putting my hand around the B pillar to push the outside of the window in whilst using my other hand to put the screws in

Just a quick addition to this, I did eventually get my rubbers to fit, pushing, pulling and general small adjustments only to find I couldn't find any screws.

What size are the self tappers used on the windows??

Regards,

Graham

Self tapper countersumk No. 6 by 1/2 inch, chrome. A visit to Somerford's web site would have told you that at once.
