Common Fastener Size For Minis

So I am participating in a 1,200 km back road rally soon and the organizers encourage us to bring a collection of nuts and bolts that fit our cars to aid in any possible road side repairs. I am going to hit up the local specialty fastener store and pick up a collection of different ones.

 

Questing is what thread pitch, size, should I get to be the most prepared?

5/16" UNF is by far the most common fastener thread type throughout the car, but I can't recall having to replace many, if any, of that size while being away.

 

Probably 1/4" UNF, was one I do recall needing a few of, though that was on a mate's car and he had poor threads in the Upper Front Shock Mounts.

 

Another you may go through are the 3/8" UNF Bolts for the Lower Front Shock Mounts.

 

I'd also suggest taking a few Wheel Nuts and some Front Wheel Studs.

I found a company on the web that sell new multi packs of botls just for minis.
Consists of 2000 fasteners £169 plus the vat.

But they don't label them or tell you what areas they're for specifically

to be honest I can't think of any that I would really think about taking.

Also not knowing what a back road rally entails....

But I would have a pair of ball joints and some tie bar bolts.

I would also make sure all the nuts or bolts that I might want to undo on the underside are in good condition and can be removed.

Nothing worse than being under a car in the mud with a rounded out rusted on nut.

Perfect thanks. Its a non competitive rally over half tarmac and half gravel roads. The car will be fully gone over before but its good to have some spares regardless, cheers!

As Nick says, it's the ones that are "components" in their own right that are most critical - those that go through arms and bushes.

 

The most versatile thing would be threaded rod, hacksaw, and a collection of nuts. You might struggle to find it in a decent grade, so the longest setscrews you can lay your hands on, includes a free nut too.

 

Moss Europe's online catalogue has a list of fasteners at the back, but it doesn't give quantities and application - you have to thumb through the illustrations to get that.
