Engine Management Relay Smoking!

Best Answer Mini Austria , 26 April 2017 - 10:54 AM

Yep, chaffage going on behind the manifold but got it sorted now! Im sure it has happened before because the wire has been replaced by the previous owner. Thanks for the responses.... :shifty:

Hello,

Having problems with my 1992 Spi ! The relay box would click on and off rapidly when putting the ignition on and the car would not start. Tried another relay unit i have and nothing would happen. Put the original one back on (which has seen better days!) and the car started no problem but then noticed smoke coming from one of the wires and the outer cable started to melt.....(top middle as seen in pic).

What can cause this? Is it a problem with the relay unit? or something more fundamental?

Any help appreciated before i buy a new relay (100 quid on Minispares!)

You almost certainly have a short in your wiring, the middle top wire (brown with blue) is for the manifold heater element.

If it is the wire for the manifold heater check it where on the right hand side (standing in front of the car) of the inlet manifold as it can chafe here and short out on the manifold itself, also check it hasnt fallen of the heater itself and is laying on the exhaust manifold itself, not easy to see  though so you may have to crawl underneath!

Also check the loom if it passes close to the clutch master reservoir. And where it passes behind the airbox.

I've seen the manifold heater wire come free of the connection and short out on the hot exhaust directly below it........
