My mpi overheats. I have my own theory, but thought I'd see what others thoughts are before I waste money on parts.

Symptoms as follows
- heater not getting hot
- steam blowing from expansion tank after very short time
- temp gauge never above half way
- no visual sign of oil/water contamination
- fan cuts in, but sometimes only after it has been stood with the engine off for a while.

A new pump was fitted about 9 months ago and did a couple of hundred miles afterwards with no issues. Car not used much since.

Any bright ideas guys ?

Your heater maybe that it's full of rusty silt. The overheating could be the expansion tank cap or thermostat.

could be a couple of things ...

IIRC the expansion cap can be faulty , look to see what condition it is in

could be a silted up water jacket , rad or heater - what antifreeze are you using & how old ?

hose collapsed / air lock - feel where the pipes go from hot to cold check for condition

thermostat stuck close / failed / wrong one

could be impeller on water pump broke off (sometimes happens , even to newer ones)

head gasket blowing from cyl to water jacket (you can buy a sniffer kit to look for combustion gasses in coolant)

timing / mix out of tune

brakes sticking

check the cheapest / free things first

from the mpi expert, the pipes to the heater go solid with rust and i mean solid like poo, then they overheat, this is because people dont use the correct antifreeze and the car is now old!!!!!. normally a new heater matrix, radiator and the pipes cleaned solve this, as this stuff blocks then up too also check the rad fan is working right way had a few wired wrong at the factory.
