hi i am restoring a metal slat grill to fit to my 93 sprite but im unsure if the metal backing i have taken off is needed , as all the grills i have seen on google have just been open backed. so i wondered if maybe this was for a mpi. i have included a photo of a similar grill and then the backing in question.

same style of grill this also has the backing but is it best on or off (this image is off google apologies if its someones on here)

have you got a plastic cover over the front of the engine ? -

open backed grills usually have something to stop water

I don't think I have seen that type of grill on an mpi as original - looks earlier (80's)

for the winter you really want something over the HT electrics

& possibly the summer as well

You don't need the backing off the old grille but as sledgehammer pointed out you really want one of these....

The grille your Sprite would originally have had was the same as the one in the pic -but without the bonnet release hole. They're hard to find now & of often expensive so someones fitted a 1980's grille (Mini City & others).

ok thank you, i have got one of the shields fitted so am i right in thinking its best to leave the metal off or would it just be added protection(i dont want to put it on and cause heat issues)

and to be honest this was one i purchased secondhand but i do have the original, that i will be looking to sell once i get my mini back from the welders are they worth much? its black by the way

cheers

If you got the engine shield , IMHO that is all you need

that type of grille was fitted to the City E in the mid eighties, (other fitment unsure) the back panel was replacing the plastic weather guards, so if you have a weathershield you can get away with not having it
