Thats a lot of coats of paint and lacquer!  Detail is all in the prep, the quality of paint and how well it covers will be the deciding factor in the number of coats of colour required.

It will never keep rust at bay. If there is any to start with it will always come back through no matter what.

Even multiple layers of paint will not prevent stone chip damage, It will lessen it but thats it.

Ben_O on here is a professional painter and he recommended i only do three decent coats as you can end up loosing swage lines etc. Yes i could add a clearcoat but if there is any paint damage then its easier to sort out non Clear coated paintwork.

So realistically

1. The car must be rust free to start with, not treated rust but physically replaced with fresh steel or panels.

2. Any damage at all needs to be addressed immediately. The longer its left the more chance rust will start (bare metal, scratches in the paint etc.

3. What you cannot see will hurt you, so ensure the car is throughly protected internally, paint must be good and then a decent wax based product will help to keep moisture at bay.

4. If you use the car daily then ensure at least once a week the car is thoroughly washed especially underneath. have a good look round to ensure no paint work is damaged.

The underside of the car is a prime place to check before any paint is applied. Especially in the inner wing area, rear wheel arches, rear valance etc. Any rust at all then seriously consider what you are going to do. No point whatsoever in painting a car if these areas are not in decent condition.

Any rust at all around the seams especially at the front will come back no matter what you are told. The rust is in between the seams and will work its way out rendering your freshly paint bubbly. Filling over rust again is a serious no no.

Now i'm not saying this is the case with your car but something to keep in mind before you go splashing the cash on a spray job.

Too much of something can be a bad thing.

if you pay the price and take it to the proper person you wont need to ask for a spacific amount of coats as they will do a good enough job if they know what they are doing to keep it water tight and give it a good finish. a good lacquer will usually keep stone chips at bay anyway and the underneath use a stone chip/waxoyl it...... cant really do much more. all cars rust over time. It Can NEVER be prevented forever, expecially in english weather.

too much paint has as many issues as not enough, lots of clear coar is normally because you have metal flake and want it smooth. 3 good coats is more than plenty
