Good afternoon people

Following a discussion with a colleague at work this little box machine has fallen into my hands.

VW lupo. 17 sdi diesel engine.

165,000 miles

New in clutch 2015

New exhaust 2016

Main Problems-

Mot failure

>rust

>exhaust inadequately supported

Other problems/ niggles

>No first gear/ almost impossible to get in

>Vibrates so much at idle your teeth chatter!

>Separate keys to unlock door and start car

>17years worth of scrapes and dings

Good bits.

>Newish battery

>All good tyres with no cracking

>Everything works electrically

>Tape player

>Quirky styling

>Power steering!

>Electric windows!!

>Adjustable steering wheel!!!

>Baby blue

should take some better ones really

Cost to buy

>Zero

Costs so far

>Day insurance to get her home 25 pounds

what I've already done.

>Identified and am remedying rust, patches have been made just waiting for a wind free day as welding on the drive

>Got on the ramps to look at the shifter, tweaked the cables and now I can get into first!

>Exhaust issues identified - looks like I need to cut a few bits about, main part being a crossmember thingy. nice and easy to fix

So there we have it. little project to be getting on with. Funds minimal but not sure what to do with it. insurance cheep and mpg high- tax is a bit steep but I can live with that.

keep an eye out people.

and ideas for the great vibrations let me know. its like a bus at idle only worse!!

Nice little project. I'm surprised at the rust, but I suppose it's a pretty old car now! Check your engine mounts to see if you have metal-on-metal touching, hence the noise & vibes.
As said, the Lupo SDi's selling point was good mpg.

Looks like a great low cost runabout! What a result getting it for nothing. This is my style of motoring :) good luck with the refurbishment

Cheers for the comments guys

I've checked all the engine mounts today and they seem intact and functional, the exhaust has clearance all the way along the body as that was an idea from the previous owner.

Thinking to myself during my work shift I came to the thought that the car had a dual mass flywheel (DMF) when Made. This would take dampen out alot of the vibrations. The clutch that was fitted was too cheap to be a replacement DMF therefore its most likely had a solid flywheel conversion.

This would account for the vibrations and the engine mounts being 17year old rubber although still intact and functioning will have lost alot of their flexibility to absorb the vibrations.

She drives very nicely however and has zero vibrations when moving above idle.

ill take some better photos later today as ill probably give her a good clean asa break from uni work

I ran a Lupo Sport for about four years... 1.4 16v, 100bhp, and a centre exhaust similar to the GTi. It was a great car, and I'd buy it back in a heartbeat... I only sold it because I became a dad and needed an estate car.

In fact, I have a set of Lupo Sport 14" alloys in my loft if they interest you...

Cheers NuFab, to be honest this car isn’t going to rip your face off with the speed but itll do me with the mpg!

Ill bear in mind re the wheels but not sure what im doing with her yet

So ive done more to the great vibration today

Took some more photos to shock and awe people

cambelt checked, no cracking evident, looks nice and tidy

parts removed for a good clean and to knock the dent out the wing

The bit of rubber just takes some of the play away between the lock and the handle mechanism, slightly bodgy but who is going to complain. It’s a 17year old car at the end of the day

So that’s it for today. Some more progress next week and maybe some welding if the wind and weather improves.

Not sure what to do with the boot yet. Im thinking of welding up the hole and painting the repair and the lock black also, really not sure yet tho and ill wait till she has an mot before I tackle the cosmetics

Well guys, how plans change hmm. I was a lovely morning today so I thought hey ill get that patch welded and the exhaust hammered enough to stop banging. Little did I know how soon things would change………..

So things start going down hill. Gas has gone up! Since when did it cost 18.99 for a disposable bottle! Daylight robbery that

So welded a patch and ground it down. Then did some slathering of MOT in a can as my neighbour called it (I salute you ken)

IMG-20170510-WA0000.jpeg

Things started to get bad when I accidentally leant my head on the underseal lid. Cue profanities galore until the misery got worse when I sat my head up and clonked it on the gearbox.

Started to get a bit grumpy. Meanwhile the weather is warming up and im beginning to burn under the car :(

So that done now. Hammer time. Oh that was easy, exhaust has stopped hitting stuff now!

So I gave her a wash. Here she is flapping her doors

20170510_155108.jpg

Then the tone changed for the better. Quick call to MOT man

Me-“got any gaps today john?”

John- “sure pop down”

Me- “ok shall do, let me just wash my hair in white spirit”

John- “sounds enjoyable, see you soon”

Me- “ok, cya in a bit”

Nice many phone call that, short and straight to the point.

So me and the blupo went on a trip to the MOT centre. Cor it drives strange, so much body roll I thought I was going to roll it, began to feel seasick!

So I get to the centre and chatting away found his daughter works where im on placement and we work out ive actually met her (maybe not sure). Small work hmm.

Meanwhile blupo is being put though her paces.

Dirty diesel test pass

Brakes pass

Bodywork pass

Suspension pass

Electrics pass

Me- “Huh your telling me shes passed”

John- “Yup, Shes old but shes alright for another year”

Me- “wow I had better get home before something breaks or you change your mind”

Blupo- “Yay, ill survive to see the summer!”

So me and blupo drive happily to tesco on the way home to collect a drink.

And here’s the pass sheet

20170510_164253.jpg

and here’s the lager

20170510_164736.jpg

As I treat I gave her a nice hoover out and wipe down inside.

Now what to do with her. I got a valuation on the plate the other day

600pounds! Sheesh that’s alright isn’t it!

So im now waiting for the logbook so I can sell her. Fingers crossed wont take too long.

Plan is to advertise for for 600pounds. After all shes got 12months mot. Is a eco diesel, good service history and the potential value of the plate.

What do people think? 600 too mouch or about right?

Nice little turnaround there! If the plate is worth £600 on it's own, I'd be cashing that in separately, and then just put the at on eBay. It goes for what it's worth, and you should get a few hundred total if not touching 1k.

Nice work.

Nice quick turnaround there.

I would take those plate valuations with a pinch of salt.

You will find that most of the plates on there have been for sale for years so probably not worth your hassle.

£600 seems fair for this, looks like a clean little car. Did you sort the vibration?

I bought a W plate 1.4 DOHC Lupo for my daughter last year and £600 was exactly what I paid.

Well the plate is worth £600 apparently thought a valuation company. However it would still need to sell. So basically I'm just using the plate to add to the value.

The vibration I put down to the clutch being changed to a non dmf type that would absorb some vibrations.

Aren't these too old to have a DMF?  I'd be surprised if it had one from new.  Great transformation, it should be a good cheap runner for someone!

It does indeed have a DMF. If it was a cheap clutch job they may have not changed the flywheel..

If you have access to a vag-com you can raise or lower the idle speed with it, may alleviate the harmonics
