Hi all,

So basically I have no headlights, sidelights work, but no normal or high beam. If I pull the indicator stalk towards me I do get full high beam though as a flash etc, which I guess is on a different circuit.

Been messing around trying to sort this the last few days but not getting very far..

I've replaced the bulbs, dip dim relay (pink), dash light switch.

I've checked fuses in the fuse box under the bonnet, all okay,

Also checked the spade connectors at the grill and bullet connects either side, which all seem okay.

Whats the next thing I should check? I do have access to a meter too, just a bit noob in using it.

Are they extra fuses I'm missing somewhere? I've looked behind the dash and on the bulkhead behind the air filter and can't see any...

Thanks in advance

Adam

There should be 4 inline fuses behind the dash laid across the steering column bracket tight to the bulk head one each for L/H and R/H dipped and main beam.

failing that check the wiring behind the grill

and check the bulbs manually, just in case there blown as of the fault

I see no inline fuses behind the dash at all, I've triple checked!

I've replaced the bulbs and so they should be fine 😕 Frustrating

We know that the sidelights work, therefore power is getting to the main light switch via the thick brown wire. The headlight flashers work because they take their power from the purple, permanently live fused circuit which feeds horn etc, so the circuit from the stalk through to at lest the main beam lamps is ok.

The gap in the middle is the thick blue wire from the main light switch to the stalk, which takes power from the light switch, in its headlight position, to the dip switch on the stalk. There is a connector on the back of the light switch, and a multi-pin connector between the stalk and the loom, including the blue wire. This is the only all-blue wire in the car, or should be.

If you can prise the light switch out of its panel, and check with the meter on volts range that you get about 13 volts on the blue wire when the light switch is on, and then check at the stalk to see that the voltage gets there, you may find something amiss. It is not unlikely that either the main light switch or the stalk has failed internally, the light switch being most likely.

The 4 fuses are I think tucked under the dash lining. They are arranged so that one fuse blowing does not take out both lights, a legal requirement, so unless they are all blown (and how would that happen?) they are not likely to be involved in the problem.

is there any pins I can bridge in the indicator stalk plug to see if the lights come on, i.e bypassing the stalk?

thanks

Yes, but I don't have the diagram to hand right now. It will be in your Haynes. The important thing to check is that the blue wire at the stalk connector is really carrying 12V when the light switch on the dashboard is on. We know that there is continuity through the stalk flasher contacts and the fuses to the main beam bulbs, because they can be flashed. Have you actually tried bridging brown to blue at the main light switch? I still feel that is near where your problem lies and is the most important and logical check.

But at the stalk you must have an incoming blue and outgoing blue-white and blue-red. (or 4 outgoing blue-something wires depending on where they split to go to the fuses). You can try bridging blue to blue-red for dip, or to blue-white for main, or to blue-something to get one bulb at least. These colours are on the main harness, I have no idea what the colours on the tail end from the stalk will be.
