So - sprayed all but last 2 panels on the mini in Almond Green cellulose. No problems at all. Bought one more litre from same supplier to finish the boot lid and the following happens, same gun, same thinners, same environment.........

Sprays on  - looks fine.

Leave it 5 mins, little hard bits appear (like grit) on the surface, looks like someone has thrown sand on it.

When dry, flatting reveals the hard bits are blue and very hard - paint sands, blue lumps won't.

Old paint sprays fine.

Cleaned gun, air filter on compressor, area dust free.

I'm thinking defective supply of paint with some fault in the 'blue' component.  Paint supplier happy to provide more paint, but how to check problem solved - rubbing it down is really hard work with each 'bit' needing individual finger sanding to get it flat. Using a bock leaves the hard bits exposed. ARGGGGHHH

I was so close to finishing - anyone else been supplied defective paint or is the problem elsewhere?? Can't think where, reverting to old paint (non left now) solved problem.

I take it you didn't pass the paint through a micro strainer when putting it in the gun pot?

So the blue is actually pigments then?

I would pass some through and see what collects. Perhaps one of the tints they used is past it's best?

Either way, I would be reporting the problem to the supplier.

Good luck with it.

Ben

+1 on what Ben says! and you can buy a small strainer that goes in the bottom

of a Gravity feed spray gun most Bodyshop suppliers have them

This is why you should always pass the mixed paint through a fine cone filer into the gun pot and use the pot filters while spraying.

Hope you get it sorted, but it sounds like you'll need to take the paint back to primer to me.

Just to close this down - used a 150 filter and much 'crap' in paint. Took back to store as colour wrong anyway. No problems with refund. Bought paint from elsewhere - no further problems - vehicle panels finished today !!! Done the last 2 panels 4 times now !!!

They are mystified too but hopefully will sort the issue to save their business !
