Hi All,

So a patch of clear coat on my bonnet has peeled off, the patch is around 100mm square so pretty bad! Just wondering what my options are for repair? It is just the clear coat that has come off, the base coat is still in good condition, can i just gently sand down around the edges with some 2000 grit and spray some new clear then sand again with 2000 to blend in?

I just want something that will at least make it less obvious, I know it probably wont be completely invisible.

Any advice would be much appreciated!

Thanks

Will

It sounds like the bonnet has been refinished at some time in the past, the most likely cause of this is the base coat was left to long before putting the clear coat on, the best remedy is to sand down the entire bonnet to a sound base, re-coat the base coat then clear coat again but don't leave the base coat to long before putting the clear coat on. Of course any 2 pack painting should be done by a professional with the proper equipment. It will cost but is safe for the user.

I thought that might be the only reasonable answer as if I just sand and clear now it won't stick. I am quite handy with a rattle can but as its only the bonnet I will get some quotes.

Thanks for your input.

They have answered your question spot on- depending what the paint match is like- get some base coat mixed and do away with the clear coat- with modern paints you don't need to clear- and to b honest that is quite a common problem you have- but you may need t put the clear on in order to get the match good- take it in to a body shop!

All modern cars are clearcoated! Modern paint systems are basecoat and 2k clear. You are getting mixed up with 2k solid colours/acrylics

Yes it will definitely need clear as it is a metallic colour, I recently repainted a few panels with halfords rattle cans and got a very good result.
