Hi,
Just exploring whether it is possible to get a pre A+ 1098 mini engine block and match it with a mk1 magic wand type gearbox. Would it fit straight on or would I need to do any modifications?
Thanks

I had it done many years ago, before I started doing all my own repairs. As far as I can recall there were no major problems, but the guy who did it for was a fully trained mechanic with Morris Garages in Oxford, he took the engine/box out in 45 mins, outside on a cold frosty morning at his parents house, before giving me a lift home.
I'm sure someone else will be a lot more specific about any potential problems.

I once fitted an MG1100 engine straight onto a 'magic wand' 850 gearbox. No problems at all.

Think you'll find that's only necessary for the 1275 onto an early 850 gearbox. Had to do it myself once.In some cases some metal has to be removed from the transmission case to clear the big ends, due to the longer stroke of the 1098. Sit the engine in place, leaving out the gaskets but with the dowels in so it sits accurately, and rotate the crankshaft to check for fouling.
If you have an endoscope or camera, use it through all available apertures for a good look.

get a copy of how to modify your mini, there are details in there about which cases need fettling, its got the part numbers too.

What's the casting number of your MK1 Gearbox? These are the raised numbers that would end up behind where the Oil Filter would sit.
Not all MK1 will go under an 1100 engine.

While not the earliest type, it is the next one along.
Generally, the 1100 will fit them, however, they were not designed with the 1100 in mind and so can foul in a few places, but nothing that can't be fixed with a touch here and there with a die grinder. You'll want a minimum 0.050" clearance for 'safety' in case you ever do a big end bearing.
Also, there were fitted with type A gears and then later type B gears. I'd suggest, if it has the type A gears, junk it.They really were total rubbish and you'll have an awful time trying to get any parts.
All the later MK1 boxes, the 22G190, 22G333 and 22A1128, go on no problem.
The 1100 won't fit a 22A393 box.
