UPDATE: I replaced the thermostat and Expansion tank Lid..

The solution now doesn't boil over (50/50 mix), but the rad fan isn't kicking in at all, even when left to run for 30 minutes...
Hopefully, its because it doesn't need to, but I'll have to give it a good run out, see if the Rad Fan kicks in or the car overheats.

And did it? :)

I ask as I’m having the very same issue... I’ve now changed the stat, the CTS and the wiring mod tonit the expansion bottle cap and checked that the fan does come on when the plug is removed from the CTS (indicating that the ECU is operating correctly in terms of grounding out the relay properly?) and yet the blooming thing boils up on me with no movement on the temp gauge. I’ve also checked for 5v at the pink/green wire and the resistance at cold was 3020 and when I ran it up for a while roughly 300 iirc

Hi,

Does the fan come on when it overheats?

If so I'd flush the cooling system and refill with a fresh 50/50 mix and see where you go.

My MPI engine kept overheating until I flushed all the crud out of it.

Cheers  :proud:

Hi bat, nope no fan at all unless I unplug the coolant temperature sensor then it comes on permanently... I presume this should mean the ECU is working as intended ie the ground is good for the relay, otherwise it wouldn’t even be able to be controlled even under safe running?

Hi,

Is it still boiling over with the new cap on?

Have you got a way of checking the temperature other than the gauge on the dash?

It does sound like the electrical side is ok. Only other thing is to try the old temp sensor again or test the new one.

Stat on top of the sandwich plate?

Cheers  :proud:

Sorry for the late reply, mini has been in storage for 12 months. Rad fan does kick in when required, so issue seems to be fixed. It does sit for about 40 minutes idle before engaging though, not been able to give it a good run out as it isn't MOTd.

Hi guys... so... I acquired an ACR4 to see what’s going on (so far, Best Buy ever lol)

Ran the car up and when the ACR was indicating about 94° ish it started gurgling through the header tank... so I bit the bullet and splashed out on yet another new coolant cap. Fitted it and ran it up again... this time it started to boil at just below 105° and the fan cut in so it’s all working as it should electrically, however... like a muppet I went to adjust the coolant cap on the expansion tank and it acted like it was threaded (went on solidly when cold!) and when I turned it a little it shot off. Scalding my forearm with steam and hot water!

I’m wondering if the expansion tank threads are knackered causing a drop in pressure by letting the coolant cap move when it’s hot? Surely it shouldn’t be dodgy enough when it’s hot to blow clean off at the lightest touch?

It sounds like your expansion tank isnt keeping completely air tight, if it is it won't boil over before it gets to 105. It could be the cap isnt very good quality or your expansion tank could do with replacing if the thread isn't very good. I had the same problem and ended up buying a few caps, where are you getting them from?

I got one from the local motor factors and the new one from euro car parts. Both knackered now as far as I am concerned, so I’m going to go with what the new mini boys say and get a Volvo cap?? As they have the same issues as us with caps

Update... one expansion bottle and a Volvo cap and new bracket and we’re good to go :)

I recommend anyone to get those Volvo caps (but only if your expansion tank is in good order lol

Cheers guys

I have had similar Problems, did you replace the expansion tank with a new 1? what do you mean by new bracket?

Do you have any details on what Volvo cap it is?

Thanks Kevin

have you checked the fan on a battery to make sure its not an electrical fault I would have gone that route and checked the fuse to make sure you have 12v supply?

Hi Kevin... I noticed whilst searching that the new mini (R53 style) used the same cap as the classic, and also the outlet and inlet were in pretty much exactly the same place, so I acquired a bottle and bracket and set about cutting the bracket about to suit... I think the finished result is acceptable, although it needs a lick of black paint, but I will sort that in time... for now the bottle fits and looks pretty factory to me

as for the cap, it’s from a Volvo S60 series 1(-2004) I believe...

I've linked to the ones here.. they do have black ones which may be less incongruous but I know the green ones fit :) https://www.onlineca...n-tank-cap.html
