Hi guys, I know this topic is a common one, but I'm having a few issues and need some expert opinions!

Today I picked up my car from the specialists who have been tuning and tweaking the engine to get it to run properly. They seem to have done a good job, as the drive home was excellent. Whilst driving I kept an eye on the temp gauge which was only every just above neutral at worst, but once I got home and let it idle on the driveway for 5 minutes, I noticed fluid bubbling out of the overflow pipe on the rad, and the gauge was right up!!

I should explain, the car used to have a standard 998 with standard rad, and it now has a standard Metro 1275 on twin carbs with a Fletcher alloy rad. The rad, cap, and hoses are all brand new, so what could be causing this? I never had any cooling issues with the 998 even in the hottest weather.

My first port of call will be testing the stat, and perhaps fitting a blanking sleeve. If that doesn't do it then would an electric fan do the job? What are people experiences with the larger bladed metal replacement fans?

Any advice would be much appreciated!

Cheers

Chris

I have the smooth molded side facing the engine. Is that correct?

Update: Tested the stat in a pot of boiling water. works fine so it can't be that.

you are on the limit of the rad. dont leave the car standing.

check the cap is correct for the rad as well.

6 blade export fan, with minispares high capacity pump / 82deg stat worked for me (with thermex rad) on my 1380 :)

Electric fan cable tied on inner wing for standing traffic

Is it pinking at all? Being too far advanced will cause it to get hot

As will being too far retarded, or too lean. The only reason that too rich does not also make it overheat (simplistic explanation) is that the excess fuel transports a lot of heat out of the engine and down the exhaust, which itself may overheat.

Minimum heat output in relation to actual horsepower coincides with maximum efficiency, which hopefully comes close to coinciding with smoothest running.

If even a humble 998 is a bit off tune, it can show up as a rather worrying rise in temperature. An electric fan is indeed a good idea. especially as summer is almost upon us.
