Well after having minis for all my adult life, i was looking for something different, mainly a robin hood style kit car, however this came up on ebay within a reasonable distance, its rare and has potential to make a stonking car.

Minis are expensive for what you get these days, so whilst ill always have a passion for them, i find myself looking for something else.

This is a FT Bontio (GT40 style kit car)

It will be a long project, i dont have that much free money to do the work I want in a short scale, so it will be slowly slowly catchy monkey.

Plans so far though

- Remove body to work on chassis/engine etc first.

- Body - Remove the third brake light and scoop from rear lid.

- Body - change rear lights / rear end light configuration.

- Body - remove the black metal vents and replace with something abit more stylish.

- Body - Change some of the locks, move mirrors and respray the lot.

Then it will need a complete rewire and interior sorting, but thats ages away.

So yeah, im still around on the forum just not working on anything mini based at the mo.

Hope you like this though.

If it takes a VW engine you could fit a 1600 flat-4 over-bored to around 1750 cc (not absolutely sure on actual max over-bore) with down-draft Webers and it would really go well. A Porsche 912 engine would also fit, but that would be expensive.

An alternative engine would be a GM flat engine from the old Chevrolet Corvair. That has been done a lot in the USA on Beetle-derivatives used for desert racing and on oval circuits.

Yeah theres subaru conversion kits about too, but its all cost. A larger beetle engine would be most straight forward by looks, but will see when the time comes to that.

I've always loved the GT40 and most replicas of them.

To me, it's a timeless looking car, that looks as modern today as the day they were first conceived.

Nice one, brilliant project.

In our neck of the woods, we do have a local supplier of replicas in kit form, the 'Roaring Forties'. The chassis is one of their design and they are made to accept a wide variety of bigger V8 engines.

http://roaringfortie...au/Default.aspx

Considering what's included in a kit, they are surprisingly attractively priced.

When I get through all the projects currently on the table, I'd love to do one.

Please keep us updated on yours - regardless of what ever time frame it happens over.

Thanks for sharing.

Body is off, now discovering the items removed by previous owner which are needed to make it function.

- starter motor missing

- throttle lever missing

- exhaust completely missing

- front to rear brake pipe to renew

- clutch cable end at gearbox missing

- and so on.....

Want to get the chassis/engine sorted so it will run and drive then drop the body back on to do that work (allowing me to take it in and out of garage when required)

Progressing well, chassis is just about finished, engine rebuild next up.

Its been a mad few weeks, I bought an Eagle SS kitcar to steal the type3 engine and turbovec alloys, then sold that on. Ive just bought another bonito but a UK made one with a tube chassis and front engine/rear wheel drive based on ford cortina running gear, I only bought it for the perspex headlight covers to hopefully use as a template to get them re-made somewhere.

Chassis wise, front arms were removed and new balljoints pressed in by a local specialist. Rebuilt arms, hubs, track rods, front brakes, front bearings, brake hoses, brake pipes and master cylinder. Painted afew things etc.

The type3 engine is 1600cc but only turns 345deg before locking solid so needs strip/rebuild. Thats next on the cards, but everything is subject to a tight spending allowance at the minute.

I need to either off load the second bonito or break it for parts to get some money back on it.

Some pics....
