The owner is intending to ship the stripped parts to the USA but is not sure if I wants to make a ERA replica or sell the parts on.

US law is pretty strict with imports. It's a shame that it was neglected, would have made a great restoration.

US law is extremely lax with classics, unless you live in California (due to their strict emissions controls laws).....here in Kansas you can do anything you want.....whether its Honda swaps or Mini engine changes from a 998 to a 1380....they really don't care.

The Feds do care if you import a car newer than 25 years and try to register it, but to take these parts and put them in a new shell or anther car entirely does not matter to them at all. Anything 92 and older is not problem...newer than that is verbotten!

Could have been a tsunami victim :(

That could well explain what happened to this ERA.

Looks to be a uk spec car with sunroof! That may explain the rust

Japan is RHD like UK but it has Air Con vents under passenger parcel shelf and a compressor under alternator.............I don't think UK spec ERA had air con?

My God, there is an A/C compressor below the alternator! This must have been the ultimate factory shoehorning job in the engine compartment of a Mini! The condenser was on the right inner wing panel just like the later Japanese Minis.

Cars can rust in any country (especially old British ones). Minis are also expensive to keep on the road in Japan as they don't fit Kei class regulations so they are taxed and charged like a bigger car than it is. Maybe this one was parked due to a mechanical failure and wasn't worth fixing when they weren't as valuable a few years ago?

Heres an article with many rusty old Japanese cars:
