Hello
I am rebuilding a 1275 A+ and just replaced the timing chain and tensioner - how much tension do I need to apply to the chain? How do you know how much is enough or too much?
Many thanks

I'd just bolt the tensioner on.....and at it's minimum adjustment - i.e none , it'll be fine - the new chain will be temporarily nicely tight the only point of the tensioner really is to minimise rattle...(ok ok a worn chain will chuck the timing out about 3 degrees)
I'd have used a duplex set though ..... tentioners optional with those!

The workshop manuals give no advice other than to refit it.
I have always fitted them as tight as they go.

I fitted the A+ tensioner/ plate etc to my A series a few years back. It seemed like a good idea at the time and I suppose it was.. for a few thousand miles. Then the rattle came back. I too, could find no advice on how 'tight' to fit the tensioning shoe, so fitted it with light hand pressure. Not very scientific I'm afraid. I think I'd apply more pressure next time (like Moke says above) as the rattle is back as loud as ever again. I think it was quiet for around 6000 miles.

Thanks for your help.. I'll just push it against the chain then I guess!?

Fit a Duplex chain and sprockets and forget about the tensioner. That's what the Mk.1 Cooper 'S' had.
