Hi all

I'm thinking about fitting an alloy fuel tank to my rally car
http://www.conceptra...line-shop-mini/
It fits where the spare wheel is located, and as it's a rally car I still need to be able to fit a spare wheel, I thinking along the line of some sort of cradle fitted to the rear bulkhead above the tank.

This must have been done before so I'm looking for pictures and advice on this one.

Cheers

Kevin

I don't know if there'd be the height to do that vertically, or the depth tho do it horizontally.

I'd be looking at a cradle where the old tank used to be, with the wheel vertical - maybe even one each side if you run two spares.

Too difficult to get to Nick if you need to change a wheel in a hurry on a rally, even with fully opening side windows.

There is no way I can have the spare in the car, with the cage, seats and harnesses I would never be able to remove it!

Looking at this new tank, I think there may be enough room, above it, if the spare is stored horizontal

Possibly - although you'll probably need to remove the spare every time you fill up.

the distance between the rear seat and boot is not enough.

what is the cage? I am guessing with belt bar is it the bolt in type if yes I can see your issue.

like I said I had mine in there with cage (pre belt bar needs) and harnesses that went to the bottom of the rear seat base. it was tight but doable.

I run two 165r10s sat on top of each other in the wheel well - that allows the boot to close but it is getting close.

That tank is obviously higher than one spare, so Nick may be right that it would be too tight to get one above it.

I would also question the measurements. not sure how much of the sticky up bits it really includes.

What size wheel and tyre combo do you run?

If 10's, they might stand upright on one side or the other of the tank.

Plenty of space on top, but not enough space front to back to close the boot lid.
I just tried standing the tyre up, but that doesn't appear to be possible either.

How about a cradle to mount the tank higher so the spare will go underneath!

Or creating a upright wheel well to the side of the tank like the volvos/mantas used to have.

Bit of work to make either work.

How about a letter box slot in the rear seat bulkhead? you could make it deep enough that you'd just need a strap to hold the spare securely. and it would be out of the way of the tank.  Bit like an MGA Coupe but boxed in?

I was competing in a rally at Donington a month or so back. There was a very trick mini there. He had the same problem.

What they had done in the end was cut the seat back out and then fabricate round the wheel so it slotted in. It was beautifully done, but would require some good fabrication skills. I also think that it would have required the spare to be removed to fill the tank.
