Went for a mooch around today our new ish local one, how can they be so cheap, even for branded stuff? Think I may give them a go. Not sure how good the beers are, see some familiar ales there though.

they buy in big volumes years in advance. their own brands are not bad either.
my local Lidl had some English Beers in the other week cheaper than Tescos were advertising (I am nor UK based)
always check their offers in the store mag or on line.

The app is good to keep an eye on offers.
I bought a cigarette lighter adaptor thing the other week and it's superb apart from the fact I stuck the sticky pad to the label which then peeled off in the heat

We switched from weekly shops in Sainsburys to monthly shops in Lidl and it's saved us some serious money.
Although we've found that the veg can bey sketchy at times so we tend to get that weekly and from a 'better' brand.
I used to be a bit snobby about the budget supermarkets, I'm not cash strapped so why should I bother? But then you work out how much you pay for that snobbery and, well, it settled itself.

Aldi beers are great, the smaller bottles of IPA etc around £1are very tasty
Also keep an eye on the tools, they aren't great quality but they are cheap!

Used to only shop at Sainsbury's before that.
The weekly shopping bill has halfed since using Aldi/Lidl.
We have saved a fortune.
Fair enough you can't get everything you want at the cheaper supermarkets, but glad we made the switch.

Really ? I found (since the other half is a food technologist) that Lidl and Aldi stuff tends to have less additives and trans fats that the branded stuff. I suppose it depends what your buyingYou need to watch the fat and sugar content of the cheaper supermarket own brands if you want to eat really healthy food.

In addition to the beers I find their extra special range to be a nice change to completely home cooking etc. e.g. their brioche buns and burgers are extremely tasty. Having an Aldi near my gfs and a Tesco near mine I find if we are doing cooking I end up going to Aldi even tho Tesco is on my way. Its sad the big supermarkets like tescos and Morrisons are only now cottoning on that people are less snooty nowadays and that like you said Icey the money you save is considerable

The price difference between Morissons and Aldi is quite striking, but then you don't get a proper bakery, hot counter, deli or fish bar.
The meat is decent though, I don't really rate supermarket butchers, the sausages especially are really poor quality.

Henney' s cider. £2 Sainsbury's. £1.25 Aldi (i.e. same stuff is 60% more expensive at Sainsbury's)
Aldi baked beans - less salt than Sainsbury's reduced salt beans.
Aldi nappies 7p each. Pampers 21p (and Aldi came second only to Pampers in a Which? review).
