Just been doing some research on the web regarding the various coils available.
It seems the previous owner has fitted the wrong type of coil - a Lucas DLB105 sport coil. This has a primary resistance of 3 Ohms.
The 65DM4 dizzy needs less than 1 Ohm, which the GCL143 provides.

Over time, this has possibly burnt out the ignition module.

All the info is here on what coil fits what ignition in the FAQs Electrical where strangely no one seems to look ? http://www.theminifo...tributor-types/

Just a quick update - fitted new ignition module & made a new loom from coil & module.
It fired up but still misfiring.

I suspect it's the troublesome DLB105 coil!
A new GCL143 is on its way! Fingers crossed that will solve the problem.
Might aswell fit new dizzy cap & rotor arm at the same time.

Oh, something else I noticed was that is no vacuum advance pipe connect from carb to dizzy.
It is actually routed from carb to one of the spigots on the thermostatic vacuum switch.
The other spigot has a pipe which goes off to the wing, which I presume the other end is fitted to the carbon canister.

Is this right? Should have the vacuum pipe from carb going to the dizzy instead?

Run a new pipe from the carb to the dizzy, don't bother with the thermostat switch and canister in the wing, that will help a lot.

New GCL143 coil, dizzy cap, rotor arm & advance pipe from carb to dizzy.
Still misfiring! :(

Just checked the plugs to see what state they are in.
Seem to be sooted up, so will lean out the mixture to see if that helps.
Will also check the plug gaps as they are new ones.

Have you done a test on the ignition leads? tests and readings in the Electrical FAQs, check the Distributor Cap for tracking, Rotor arms also track to earth

It's been changed for a GCL143 now.

Have you tried the cheap stuff like engine and boot earth straps cleaning the fuse box etc.

Checked the ignition leads today.
Visually they look ok, no cracks & connectors have no burns, etc.

Did a resistance test on each lead. There aren't any ratings written on leads, so haven't really got a reference.
The readings were:-

1 = 5.47kOhm
2 = 4.66kOhm
3 = 4.43kOhm
4 = 5.65kOhm
King lead = 5.27kOhm

1 & 4 seem to higher than the 2 & 3. As is the king lead, but is this enough to make it misfire?

Here is the reading I took from a new set of leads

Cylinder No 1 = 6.04k ohms
Cylinder No 2 = 6.33k ohms
Cylinder No 3 = 6.40k ohms
Cylinder No 4 = 4.70k ohms

King Lead from Distributor = 5.68k ohms

As a guide standard ignition leads are approx 7ohms per foot and some are marked that, yours are within spec so unless the insulation is braking down check all the other components first, are the plugs black and really sooty ? this could be the cause or one of the plugs is breaking down under load.
