I bought the angled type valve from 'spares 3 years ago, fitted it 2 years ago and have travelled about 2,500 miles since then - now coolant/steam pouring out of it. Annoyed!

Yep they're a nightmare, I just went ahead and fitted a DSN bypass stub instead, as I always drive with the heater on anyway for fear of overheating.

I ended up trawling ebay for a good used one, after we had a coolant explosion in a freshly painted engine bay

Can you post a or e-mail a picture of the failed unit? Does it have MSC marked in the side? Thanks

Iv recently removed mine too, bought it brand new and the thing is seized open...!!! (Bought new off Minispares, last year IIRC)
So removed the entire heater/blower unit and relevant hoses, gets a tad warm inside a Mini in summer with the heater on....LOL
Will re-install the heater/blower when the cooler weather starts to get here again.... wont be long now I reckon...

When it happened to me I ended up putting it back together and tapping the casing over the bit that popped out more, thats the only reason they fail. I don't think it leaked again after that.

Another option below if you are happy to do away with the valve or use a later inline valve in the hose:-
Heater Take Off Stub - RetroSport - angled - 5/8"
Replaces the heater tap on the cylinder head

Along with that if a valve is still wanted, CBS have a few, eg
https://www.carbuild...12-heater-valve
and
https://www.carbuild...58-heater-valve
as a cheaper option to the DNS takeoff, these are also available, though not as attractive

After making this mod, both the take-off stub and ball valve, any suggestions as to the best disposition for the unused cable in the engine bay? Strap it to the firewall in case you decide to go back to dash-mounted control later on?

It would be a wise idea to tie it back out of the way somewhere as you wouldn't want it ending up on the Solenoid or in the Fan Belt.
