I think many of us have seen at least the odd Star Trek Episode or Movie.

Although 'only' Science Fiction, it's somewhat surprising how many gadgets have come from this show in to our everyday lives, eg, the original Motorola Flip Phone was modeled on the Communicators used in this series.

I have read in a few journals now that the Transporters they have are possible for inanimate objects, though take a lot of energy to operate.

While looking for cylinder heads today, I stumbled on to a 'Replicator', which I think, since the advent of 3D Printing, many could see wasn't too far away. This still only appears to be only in a single material, but to me at least, is a further advancement / leap forward from 3D printing;-

The long held dream of long (very long) distance space travel will rely on these kinds of technologies to make it possible. Tools and spares will no longer need to be taken as they will be able to make them on-route.

Wonderful technology.

I was reading a report regarding replacing spare parts on US military aircraft in the Middle East. Some of the more common non structural components are now not shipped out, they are repaired by using locally produced 3D printed replacements.

There was talk of having a 3D printer on the International Space Station so that they could print tools, spare parts etc. up there instead of having to spend money on carrying them up there or having to wait for the next mission to arrive there.

All pretty cool!

The advances in 3D printing lately have become amazing, and most importantly, they are becoming affordable for the (above) average tinkerer. Here is an example:

But the most important one:

So, we are definitely getting close to having a replicator!

The mind goes in to orbit when I think about where this is all headed. Amazing stuff I recon.

I also find it incredible when I look back over the past 100 years or so and see all the advancements in technologies, especially the past 30 years or so. I tend to scoff far less at Science Fiction these days. It was after all Fiction that Man would walk on the Moon,,,,until July 1969 when Fiction became Fact.

The idea of whipping up a Pizza,,,, MMmmmmmm,,,,,,,I'm hungry already,,,,,,,

UKCooper, while one of these may in some future time be able to make beer, I can't see it tasting any good!!  Very happy to be corrected on that :D

I nearly pulled the trigger on a 3D printer recently only to read there's something better and cheaper just round the corner...  If/ I find a machine that does metal and/or plastic I might just do it.
