Not sure if you guys have ever been to see or indeed participate in these fast Mini Cars.

I first saw them in magazines as a kid, but it wasn't until about 10 years ago I saw - and heard - them in the flesh.

I took the family to a model park for the day. As soon as we got out of the car in the car park, we heard this ,,, sound ,,, quite loud, very loud in fact and almost indescribable but sounded 'fast' - real fast.

After looking about to try to see where this sound was coming from, we saw a big ring of people (about 3 deep) and so we headed on over. By the time we got near, the sound stopped and then when we got in close enough for a look, we could hear a similar noise again, but honestly, we couldn't see anything, just everyone was peering in this ring of noise, then a guy leaned over with a straw broom and the tone changed, eventually we could see a model car on the end of a tether slowing down.

Seriously, I would rate this as a 'must do' at least once in one's life time;-

there was a post on facebook showing these but from the 50s or so,  i was more aware of the tethered planes. that was mad as you could crash them.

I had seen the video and the speed and sound is unbelievable. As a kid, I built a couple of model planes and flew them in circles twice. I would get dizzy, and the plane would start to oscillate more and more going up and down until it would crash and break in a zillion pieces. Gave up after that.

That's bonkers, I can't really see the appeal but that's OK, whatever floats your boat.  What are they powered by?

The video clip by the way is not the action I saw, just one I grabbed off you tube.

The local track I took the family to was 'lined' by railway sleepers standing in their end - just in case. And they replaced the tether wire about every 6 runs or so.

Engines used, I think seem to vary from about 1.5 cc to I think 10 cc, maybe more ??  These are mostkly 2 stroke engines, similar to those used in model aircraft

saito30s.jpg

At a rough guess that one would be about 5 cc.

They do from around 15 000 to 25 000 RPM and no, that's not a typo.

An older guy (actually, ancient) that I got talking to said it was 'all in the exhaust and aerodynamics' he also went on to say 'it's a beatch when they wheel spin, 'cause they don't start doing that until about 120 - 150 mph'. Yeah, that'd be a beatch,,,,,,

In that clip I posted, which goes from a start, you can very clearly hear and see the car go from off the power band to on the power band, a little like a wild cam, but if you watch the speedo, it really accelerates big time from about 150 mph to 200 mph.

The sound, while coming though to some degree in that clip, really is something to be heard first hand and you will never forget it.

The Jets are yet another thing altogether,,,,

What happens to the guy in the middle, it's going to fast for him to spin round surely?

Does he like duck under the tether or something?

There's a platform on the central pole for him to stand on, above the line of the tether. Otherwise it would probably take his feet off!

Just found this while looking to answer r3k1355's question and it also satisfies the 'green' community

Yes it's fast but without that sound, it doesn't come within a bulls roar  :D

it's actually almost boring.
