I am replacing my current MED (silver) housing with a DSN (black) with provision for a temp sensor.

The thread size on both housing for the oil drain line are 1/4NPT.

On the MED housing the taper seals up no problem:

However, in the DSN housing it never really seals on the threads and the union screws all the way in until the shoulder of the union fouls the housing (at least it seems like that).

Measuring the first threads the MED:

The DSN:

While threading the union into the DSN housing it certainly feels a lot looser than it does with the MED housing.

I wonder if there is a problem? Or do I worry about nothing?

Seems as though the taper has been cut much deeper.  Have you checked that it is in fact a taper?

would a dowty seal / washer work , or is the thread too loose ?

we use them at work at very high pressure

is there enough of a mating surface for one ?

If it's been cut correctly I'd just give it a few wraps of ptfe tape to build it up and when you've screwed it in trim if off. Having said that, I'd talk to Grant first just to make sure the thread has been tapped correctly and you're fitting the correct connector.

I give them a call tomorrow.

if you bought the kit from MED (head and pipe) there is no guaranty that they put the same thread in the housing for the adaptor to the flex hose.

call both and check.

Both are 1/4 NPT as stated on both webpages.

well if you actually read the info they dont say that-

The thread in the filter head is 1/4" NPT so you will need a hose or adaptor to suit this.

It will not work with the factory fitted metal pipe.

The filter head has a ¼ NPT taper thread for oil pipe union fitting, this is the standard thread as used on the standard A series filter head.

the MED one does not say what the thread in the housing is just what the adaptor is top allow it to work with the standard pipe.

I must be missing something:

MED - The filter head has a ¼ NPT taper thread for oil pipe union fitting

DSN - The thread in the filter head is 1/4" NPT

From that, the MED thread is a tapered thread and the DSN a parallel thread. They are different and not really interchangable.

but NPT should be tapered - NPS is the straight thread form of NPT (and other variations).

again ask the suppliers what the actually supplied.

having called both MED and DSN

Both the MED and the DSN housing are 1/4 NPT (tapered).

DSN assured me that the the issue I thought i was having is a non issue. I should use  some thread sealant-

I used ptfe tape on my DSN oil filter head / oil  temp sender connections, seemed to work.
