Hello,

Someone can help me with one question? I have a health problem and i need to change the my job area... I'm a welder but my lungs can't stand the gases anymore. So if I am forced to work for another 30 years until I retire, i decided that I wanted to change my working area and go for what I really like to do.

Does anyone know where I can take a course like this one in the title (Motor Vehicle Repair & Maintenance for cars or bikes)
and if someone say if the schools accept me at my age?

I know that it's a little late to do that, but with my health problem, i don't want just try... I have to change.

Thank you guys :)

Air fed welding mask? Gotta be easier than an entire career change.

I have been welding 20 years , with a 3m respirator & enclosed mask / hood , you still get the fumes , filters get blocked quite quickly - still get coughing fits

& the air in the workshop is polluted , so as soon as you take the gear off you are breathing the stuff , even with the correct extraction

only go into car repair / maintenance , if your back / hands / knees are still good , that is why I moved on from cars

The car trade has changed a lot in the past 2 decades , when I took my C&Gs & HNC in motor vehicle there were no computers (as such) in cars ,

only the basic ECU , & the odd modules / relay boxes

if you want to train on classics & have the back for it , read this book - https://www.amazon.c...lier/0748705317

it is known as the bible , you would be told to buy if you start college

I took City & Guilds , as well as motor vehicle foundation courses to start with then went on with the ONC , HNC

I believe the courses are more modular now so you can concentrate on the areas you want to work in

I think you should stick with classic cars , as newer stuff will take a lot of training & the money is less than welding , unless you are lucky

it is a very under rated trade & is a lot of training & responsibility for little reward , you will also need tools - £xpensive

you could go for mobile servicing , without doing diagnostics etc , money could be better if self employed

best thing to do is to go on the forums & ask around , pop into the nearest college , they will have advise for you

best of luck

would not go into the motor trade to be honest, and speaking to people about them motor bikes things, thats as bad, clean environments maybe think about a outside job around what your doing, or in maintenance, so air is a bit cleaner

why not try for a service advisor post? still involved with cars but you get a cleaner environment and less pollution, the only drawback is you have to deal with the customers!!  When I put my back out a few years ago that's where they placed me for a year I quite enjoyed at the time and was good training for running my own business which I've done for the last 20 odd years
