I'm about to insure my 1989 mini thirty, after being off the road for a couple of years. I seem to be having a lot of trouble getting my head around how to much detail I need to go into when declaring modifications. How do I explain this lot? :/

 

metro 4 pot calipers, vented discs & drive flanges.

goodridge braided brake hoses.

minispares adjustable bottom arms, tie rods & poly bushes.

poly tower bush & minispares alloy top piece.

hilo ride height kit.

protech adjustable shocks.

 

adjustable engine steadies.

minispares alloy rocker cover

12g295 cylinder head.

maniflow exuaust manifold & 1.75'' single box side exit exhaust.

alloy inlet manifold.

k&n filter inside standard housing

electronic points.

2 core radiator

Minispares radiator hoses.

tim voltmeter, oil pressure gauge  and clock.

2 hella comet 500 spotlights 

h4 headlights

 

Probably other bits I can't think of ATM.

I'm with HIC and that's how I list them, I don't know who you're using but the team at HIC understand mods listed in that way.

I personally wouldn't bother with the ones I've striked through.

 

As how far do you really go with declaring anything non standard? Mines got a larger non standard battery fitted, and different battery terminals....

They should ask you for mods on these following categories.
Engine modification.
Drivetrain modification.
Chassis modification.
Braking modification.

I have gone with adrian flux for my modified mini and thats the areas they were interested in.
All my mods were declared and no issues.

Sometimes they ask about interior mods, but really they are interested in if it's got bucket seats and a cage, or a load if custom trimming.

My philosophy is send them a list & list everything, leaving them to choose to ignore what they like. That way they can't try & wriggle out of a claim on the grounds that you didn't declare something minor/cosmetic that you considered to be insignificant. Be aware that in the event of a theft claim, some insurers are quite good at trying to claim that certain seemingly insignificant cosmetic modifications potentially make a car more desirable to a potential thief.

+1, Even though at the time all i did to Paddy was convert from drums to Cooper S discs and add Hi Lo's when i fitted new suspension cones. Better to cover all the bases than not to.

 

Believe me you will be playing with fire if you don't and could potentially lose a lot of money in the event of theft or an accident.

Seconded (or is it thirded) it's not  just added risk for performance mods, it's specifying what you want covered by the policy. You can rest assured they'll take a much bigger interest if you ever have to claim.

Full list of modifications and a few photos. If you're with Adrian flux, they will try and worm their way out of paying up. Worst insurance brokers by far.

Can't get any online quotes due to the number of mods. I'll need to do some ringing around whilst at work. My preferred insurer is Aviva. I've been insured with them for the mini, 5 years ago, and the mk3 astra. When I mentioned putting a  x20xev in the astra they had a hissy fit, so don't think they will want to insure the mini now either.

When I mentioned putting a  x20xev in the astra they had a hissy fit, so don't think they will want to insure the mini now either. 

The only way I could get a competitive quote was speak to HIC. They were very good, understood what I wanted and offered a great price and agreed value, even with 2 full pages of mods.

I know this post is a bit old Anthony, but I used to work for Aviva and they are not set up to deal with modified cars. They have a specialist vehicle underwriting section (not available to the public) for their commercial side but it's mainly for business use. All they're interested in is standard stuff. The rest is too much work for a big company - it's a lot of work for not much gain from their point of view.

 

You are much better off going to a specialist as they will understand what you mean. The personal car insurance bods at Aviva will have no idea what you're talking about. It was bad enough when I worked there - one of our employees (who worked as a Minifleet processor - by that I mean 5-12 vehicles for small businesses) had no idea what a Renault Espace was...
