I'm helping my mate recomission his Cox Gtm which is fitted with a 1330 a series engine with worked head and we think a 286 cam it came with a 40 dcoe fitted which is in a very poor state so we have decieded to fit a Hif 44 su to get it running and make it easier to set up at home before getting it on the rolling road. What needle/ spring would you advise as a starting point to get it running at a safe level?

I had a 1293 with a 286 and worked head which ran perfectly with a BDL. I've also had a 1330 with and evo1 cam and very well flowed head which went well with a BDP. Someone with more knowledge than me will be able to give you a better steer but either of those may be a reasonable starting point.

As Mrpeanut says you may well be ok with BDL or BDP  they are both a usable needle for a tuned 1275cc plus...BDL is the standard MG metro BDP is generally stage one. BBC (nowt to do with telly or Blackburn brake and clutch haha) is a good one for a 286/296 cammed engine.

All three are very similar at the bottom end, BBC being leaner at the bottom and then much richer...its gunna be a guess anyway as its pretty much an unknown motor and I guess won't be run much or revved too high before the dyno.

By Bottom end I mean the thick end of the needle, bottom end of revs / throttle.

If you can get it started/running and revving a bit without drowning the plugs and ticking over reasonably (even if its high) then its dyno time

hi yall

its been a while.

well i have caddy on the road.

goes like a rocket.

i am running a bdd needle in my hif44 on a 1330cc with 276 kent cam but its a bit juicy on fuel.

roller rockers 1.5 LDX, med pistons and pushrods, lightened and balanced flywheel with a turbo clutch plate.

the standard needle was a bfm, had it static tuned and a bdd was fitted which allowed her to run better.

idle is a little lumpy due to the cam and im running a k&n air filter.

too improve the fuel range i had a 10.5 gallon tank custom made and that's in the boot in-place of the standard tank.

is there another needle or needles i can try to reduce fuel consumption but still have the same acceleration.

any help would be good.

A better head and bigger cam. But if it's a roadcar just keep your spec and enjoy the torque.

If you have not had it on a rolling road you are  guessing,  as is everyone else

 

...get it set up correctly you will have the best of both

 

After a RR session its at optimum efficiency... don't boot it and you get the optimum fuel use

 

A rolling road tune is a lot cheaper than fuel
