Go to YouTube and search for 'Rosemary Smith Drives a F1 Car'.

You will see my friend Rosie driving an F1 Renault, and boy can she still drive! The oldest lady to drive an 800 bhp race car. what a record.

There is a lot of life left in we 'old 'uns' yet!

Actually in a lot of things, 'Oldies' have been there, done it and got the T-shirt a long time ago.

a Quote from my old driving instructors Obituary.

She was lured back to rallying in 1988 when, aged 72, she won the women's section in the Pirelli Classic Rally, a 2,300-mile round trip in the Alps, driving a 1961 Ford Anglia. Overall, she came 18th out of 104 finishers. She went on to compete in several more classic rally events., eventually retiring in 1997.

some of you may have known her.

That can only have been Anne Hall.
She was another fantastic and talented driver. I recall an event where there was a test near the Jag factory and Anne was there as a guest. She was asked to do a demonstration run in an6old Jag and she had to borrow my crash helmet.
She was also a charming and very nice person. She also drove the big works Rovers very quickly.

I believe that there are only 4 ladies who have won an international rally outright, as opposed to the ladies prize: Pat Moss, Michele Mouton, Rosemary Smith and Ewy Rosquevist. But there were many others who were right on the pace with the men and Anne Hall was one of them.

How Rosie drove that works Sunbeam Tiger V8 on the cols and passes of the European Alpine roads always surprised me. Having driven one I know how heavy they are to steer as there is no power steering.

When Michele Mouton took fasted time up Pike's Peak in the USA in a full-spec Audi Quattro she really pissed off those red-neck Yanks! "Gee, she's just a little girl"!

There was a lady rally navigator who on being awarded the ladies prize refused it as she said she didn't want a cup for just being a woman and that a ladies award was sexist and discriminatory. She said it is as if women are not expected to be competitive.

I always though those lady crews looked very sexy in their tight racing overalls (now that's sexist!!).

the stories the locals used to tell about Her and the Minis. like getting stuck between 3 of them and just having to go with the flow. (that is to say faster than planed).

her driving lessons were very hard to get as she was normally booked up for years. but it is amazing what you can pick up from such a teacher in a very short time.

Michelle Mouton was very unlucky not to have been World Rally Champion. Awesome driver  :techsupport:

As for Rosemary Smith, what a legend.

I have had the pleasure of having dinner with Rosemary a couple of times recently and she is a charming and vivacious lady.
And what a driver she still is.
