I've always found an air chisel works wonders to separate these.


But then again an air chisel will separate the whole car if that's what you need!

 

True but it dispenses with separating the cone and trumpet in a very quick time with no damage to either component.

 

Unlike doing it by hand with a chisel and hammer the shock is much easier to deliver and the result is excellent.

I have usually found that getting the trumpet out of the doughnut is easier than getting the ball out of the trumpet, which often involves much heating.

 

I always use Copaslip when replacing the knuckle joint and also drill a small hole in the side of the trumpet, just intersecting the top of knuckle shaft, to allow egress for any water that might somehow get into the trumpet.
