I've got the original vin in the car and it very clearly shows it's code, thing is over time half the paint from the BMC plate has rubbed / worn off.
Replace or leave be?

I would leave it
just make sure the rivets are good
I've had one fall off due to corroded rivets in the past

Rivets seem to be good, in whole car seems in pretty good nick considering its age
