Now I know (well, I'm sure anyway) the rear badging on my 1971, down with the dvla as being a Morris mini by the way, is wrong. But I'm not sure what is right to be honest, so I need your help.

I've bought one of these but I still don't know if it's right

I saw this on a 1971 Morris/ Austin this morning

The top one is correct for all 70s Minis. Some people like to put the handwritten style badges on to make the car look more retro.

Think about this a minute !! Why would an austin morris car be badged as austin ??? That would make it an austin.
There is actually no such thing as an austin morris, just as there is no such thing as a mini racing flame or a mini sky rose.
People really need to stop blindly beliving what is writen on their V5 !!!
By 1971 the company name was British Leyland and minis would be badged like that, or just as mini with small BL logos on the a-panels.
Many V5's would claim the car was austin or austin rover etc but in the early 70's they would not be badged as such. They did start to fit austin badges on the grilles a bit later though.

Didn't the Austin grille badge come in with the first City's in 82, off the top of my head?

Laurie: Pics of a 1970 British Leyland (Austin-Morris) Limited Mini 1000

http://www.minipassi...0 1000 1970.pdf

Austin-Morris being a division of BLMC (British Leyland Motor Corporation 1968-1975).

Originally Minis assembled at the Austin plant in Longbridge normally had an Austin badge & those assembled at the Morris plant at Cowley were mainly badged as a Morris.

All Mini production was concentrated at Longbridge in 1968 & they never used an Austin or Morris badge on any Mk3 Mini.

(as noted above an Austin badge was resurrected for some Minis in the mid-80's).

For some reason your V5C will state the maker as Morris .... & your VIN plate says BMC Cowley (the same as on my '71). I've no idea why!

Edit: When you buy some BL badges for your A panels you need the BLUE ones with silver logo/writing (not the later silver ones with blue logo/writing).

The black and silver mini 1000 badge is the right one for your car.
When I used to hand write mot certificates I always looked at the tax disc for the vehicle make on british leyland cars. Early 70's minis were always austin or morris (mines a '72 "austin mini 1000" on the v5, the '72 850 I had only stated "morris mini" on the v5)
If I remember rightly late 70's minis stated "leyland" or "leyland cars" on the v5/ tax disc and 80's minis "austin rover" & 90's models were probably "rover"

The V5 for your '72 Mini 1000 states Austin! ....(so i was wrong, they don't all state Morris) -not surprising really as the V5 info has never been infallible.

Which chassis plate does it have? The BMC version or the Austin-Morris one?

Just looked at chassis plate, it's BMC.
My 1970 1275gt was an austin
My 1972 850 was a morris
My 1972 clubman estate was a morris.
I'm sure the clubman estate and the 850 both had bmc chassis plates, can't remember about the GT.

this problem I guess was somewhat due to the conversion from paper to computer at the DVLA, my fathers MG midget is Vermillion red, which is quite a light red, but during the computerisation it was noted as purple, and when the new red V5c arrived we had it changed back to red,

Early Mk 3 Minis have British Motor Corporation on the chassis plate. Whether the car is registered as an Austin or Morris depends whether the garage that sold the car to its first owner was an Austin or Morris dealership.
