Hi guys and girls, I hope this is in the right section.

Today I recieved my new 'Mk2 on' rear panel from M-Machine for my '72 mini 1000 project. As we know, a slit cutout of the rear gutter would be correct for the age, as is on my car currently. However the new panel I received today came with no slit, but the corner of the gutter cut out as you find on later models.

Anyone have any experience in replacing an early rear panel or know if you can get them made anymore? Or is it going to be a case of modifying the new panel?

Sam

I would have a go at modifying your new panel. Make a filler piece for the gap, i use a section of 6mm round bar to form a gutter section, then once formed you need to make a careful cut so probably best to use a Dremel or similar and then carefully expand the cut down.

Thanks for that. Do you use the 6mm bar as a former and work a flat piece of steel around it to achieve the radius?

Yes i did, you may need to shape the bar to form a curve and also the cross section is not perfectly circular.

I had to do exactly the same to fit a new windscreen surround on my mk2 just other end of the car, I fitted the panel first then fabricated new corner pieces by forming around a piece of 8mm bar bent to shape of corner and welded them in position, I then cut a slit and used a large chisel ground to same radius as indent to carefully form it in correct place, came out very good, in fact if you look at page 18 of my resto it shows the finished job
