Today I visited my local (ish - it's 20 miles away) mini shop- bullmotif mini spares for those interested- and picked up a brand new rear number plate lamp unit.
Thing is these come ready painted (mine is dark blue) so I'm going to have to sand back fill prime (just in case of minute scratching from sanding/ already there), prime (white? Grey?) then go over with the top coat of glacier white also purchased today.
Question is, on small parts is aerosol paint ok? I wouldn't dare use it on larger areas such as even the boot itself

And second does a solid non metallic colour need laquer?

I've painted more than my fair share of alloys in the past, never actual body parts, process is going to be the same, flatting back with wet/dry at every stage

Aerosol paint is fine. Its all in the prep that makes the difference. You can buy professional cans which have a far superior spray. A local paint shop can mix up a tin for you. And no you do not have to use clear coat on a solid.

I would epoxy prime, filler prime (flatting back in between) then topcoat. You could etch instead of epoxy but thats your choice.

100% agree on using mixed cans from a paint supplier. The finish is far superior to the ones from Halfords et al

I'd just scuff it with 400 and then prime, wet flat with 400, 4 coats of colour, flatten between coats with 600 wet, then when it's dry knock it back with 1200 and finally buff with compound to a lovely finish.

The paint I got was directly from bullmotif mini spares.
When I come to have to get the rest of the car covered it'll be paint from a car paint specialist (Middletons Gloucester if anyone wants to know)
