Hi, Looking for some advice. I need to replace the drivers door on my mpi as the bottom of the skin has completely rusted. I'm going to give minidoor.co.uk a ring tomorrow to try to get a replacement, but I wanted some advice on spraying it. I had considered dong it myself but I really want the job done perfectly, finish and colour match wise as its 1996 flame red, and i've heard that there are now quite a few variations of the colour.

I live in haywards heath in mid sussex, does anyone know a good place to get a door done? and roughly how much £ and time it would take?

Any advice would be most appreciated. ;D

(fairly broke at the moment after buying a new recon engine and box from morspeed)

i sent mine's to minidoors.com, £230 with new hinges so not too bad, they came back with the primer in so i just had to sand it with 600grit then just spray them.

good luck

Stick some Gaffer Tape over the rust for the MOT.

So long as it covers the sharp edges it should be ok.

Doesn't look pretty tho'. Lol.

yup as long as the rust isn't within 30cm of a major suspension component then you're ok I think.

Stick some Gaffer Tape over the rust for the MOT.

Now you see why so many white transits are still 'road worthy'

yup agree, MOT wise, go with Gaffer tape.

I would recommend anyone to try painting at home. Its easy if you take your time and do your homework. there are plenty of good guides on this site.

The only thing I would say is that your car is Red, which along with yellow, are the most prone to fade and bleaching by the sun. Therefore the colour you get straight out of a can (or from minidoors) will be different to the colour on your car. You might have to "blend" in by spraying into the neighbouring panels. Which wold start to make it a bit tricky for a first timer! However I always try to do something myself and if I arse it up, at least I can say I tried. Worth a shot in my estimation
