With me it started out as a joke. Back in 1968 I did some rallying in a Porsche 911 S which, back then, was a very expensive and rare rally car.  Since I had to learn to drive it, the owner (my driver - I was a navigator/co-driver) swapped cars with me for a week (I had a Cortina GT Mk.1) and I went to work in the Porsche every day. I worked in a large design office back then.

Someone asked me if it was my car and although tempted, I did tell the truth. Then I added that one day I would have a 911 and not only that but I would keep it in a garage with a fitted carpet on the floor. The reply was "Dream on"!

Life moved on, I had my own business and, in 1979, I bought a 911 Carrera 2.7 RST. I had recently moved house and had changed a large bedroom carpet which I fitted into my garage. The guy to whom I had said that I would do this some 11 years before then saw it for real! I have had a carpeted garage floor ever since and when welding I put a large sheet of aluminium down under the welding area.
